The Borough of Darby is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States. Founded in 1780, it has an eminent history. It is an exemplary community, known for its quality schools. Darby is also home to world-renowned comedians, including Todd Rundgren, who was born in the town. Matthew Judge serves as the Assistant Township Manager and is supported by a Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners are elected by Ward, with one serving the southern part of the Township, while two serve the northern portion. Joseph DiLuzio (R) represents the 3rd Ward. He also serves as Vice-President of the Board of Commissioners. In addition, a few residents serve on the Township's Board of Commissioners.
As of the 2020 census, the Upper Darby Township population was 85,681 people. This makes it the sixth most populated city in Pennsylvania. This community has a population of 52% women and 42% men. The township was originally settled by New Sweden settlers in late 1653. The Dutch eventually occupied the township. In 1655, England conquered New Amsterdam, and this township remained under the control of the English king until 1681.
The Upper Darby School District serves public education in the township. It has twelve public schools, a kindergarten center, and a high school that serves over 4,000 students. There are several private and parochial schools in the town, including Archbishop Prendergast High School for girls and Monsignor Bonner High School for boys.
